When Should My Child’s First Dental Visit Be?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit by age one or within six months of the first tooth appearing — whichever comes first. That sounds early, and most parents are surprised by it. The first visit isn’t really about treatment. It’s about establishing a baseline, checking for any early developmental concerns, and — most importantly — getting your child used to the dental environment before there’s a reason to be anxious.

Two of the most effective and most underutilized preventive treatments in pediatric dentistry are dental sealants and professional fluoride applications. Sealants are thin coatings painted onto the chewing surfaces of molars — the teeth with deep grooves where cavities most commonly start in children. The application takes minutes, involves no drilling, and provides a physical barrier against decay for years.

We typically recommend sealants as soon as the permanent first molars come in (around age 6) and again when the second molars erupt (around age 12). Combined with fluoride treatments at regular checkups, sealants dramatically reduce cavity risk during the years when children’s brushing habits are still developing.
